If you live outside India, passport renewal, reissue, and other passport services go through the Indian embassy or consulate that covers your country of residence. Start at Passport Seva at Indian Missions and choose your mission. Passport Seva does not publish a general overseas helpline.
The national call centre, 1800-258-1800, is toll-free for callers inside India. Indian toll-free numbers may not connect from abroad, and adding +91 in front does not make it an international line.
Which number matches the task
| Task | Contact | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Renewal, reissue, or a new passport while living abroad | Your Indian embassy or consulate | Find it on embassy.passportindia.gov.in |
| Application status or general questions, from inside India | 1800-258-1800 | Toll-free in India |
| The same, from Jammu and Kashmir | 040-66720567 | Paid Hyderabad line while the toll-free number has connectivity problems there |
| The same, from the North East states | 040-66720581 | Paid Hyderabad line, same temporary arrangement |
Passport Seva publishes the two paid lines for callers in those regions, not as an overseas helpline.
Opening hours
The national call centre publishes these hours:
- âșCitizen service executives: 8 AM to 10 PM India time
- âșAutomated IVRS: 24 hours
India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year, with no daylight saving. Your mission sets its own hours; check its website.
What to have ready
- âșPassport application file number
- âșPassport number
- âșDate of birth as written on the application
Before you call
Check your application status on passportindia.gov.in first. Many status questions are answered there.
For anything handled abroad, read your mission's passport page before phoning anyone. Mission processes and fees differ from a Passport Seva Kendra booking in India.
Numbers and hours can change. Confirm them on the Passport Seva Call Centre page before you dial.
What a call to India costs
The Hyderabad lines are Indian landlines. WorldDial rates in September 2026: $0.07/min to Indian landlines and $0.06/min to mobiles, in USD, billed in whole minutes rounded up. A 25-minute call at $0.07/min costs about $1.75. Check the current rate for your number on rates before adding credit.
If your mobile plan already includes cheap calls to India, use it. Browser-to-phone suits Wi-Fi-only devices and plans that charge heavily for +91 numbers. See how it works.
