How to call France from the US in 2026

Dial +33 and drop the leading 0. Paris landlines start +33 1, mobiles +33 6 or +33 7. French 0800 fails from the US. Landlines from $0.02/min on live rates.

The dial string is +33 followed by the French number with the leading 0 dropped. A Paris landline printed as 01 42 14 20 00 is dialled as +33 1 42 14 20 00. A French mobile printed as 06 12 34 56 78 is dialled as +33 6 12 34 56 78. French 0800 "numéro vert" lines do not connect from the US.

The dial string

To call France from the US:

  • +33 {9-digit national number without the 0}, or
  • 011 33 {9-digit national number without the 0} from a US landline that still needs an exit code.

011 is the US equivalent of the 00 prefix used in Europe. France uses a closed 10-digit national plan (leading 0 plus 9 digits). Internationally that is always +33 plus 9 digits. Corridor landing: call France. Format: France calling codes. Origin context: call the USA.

ARCEP is the numbering regulator. The ITU E.164 list is the international reference.

Mobile vs landline

French mobiles start 6 or 7 after +33 (domestic 06 / 07). Orange, SFR, Bouygues, and Free all sit on those ranges with portability.

Geographic landlines: 1 Paris / Île-de-France, 2 northwest, 3 northeast, 4 southeast, 5 southwest. Example: Paris +33 1 …, Lyon often +33 4 …. Non-geographic 09 numbers are VoIP and still dialled as +33 9 ….

France does not bill the receiver for a normal incoming international call.

What it costs

Four realistic routes for a US to France call in August 2026:

  • US mobile with no add-on. Verizon's standard international pay-per-minute product starts from $0.49/min (Verizon). France is a common add-on destination, but naked pay-as-you-go is the wrong tool for a 25-minute BNP or CPAM hold.
  • Inclusive US plan. T-Mobile Magenta-style lists and AT&T's monthly international add-on frequently include France. If the current plan names France, the handset wins. Confirm in the carrier app; landline-only buckets still charge mobiles separately on some Verizon Global Calling Plus variants.
  • Pre-paid calling card. Headline French landline rates look cheap. Connection fees and 06/07 mobile surcharges erase the advantage on short calls.
  • Browser-to-phone. Live rates to French landlines start from $0.02/min and mobiles from $0.03/min, billed per minute, rounded up, no connection fee.

If France is already in the mobile plan, use the handset. If it is not, browser-to-phone at a few cents is the default. How calling works: how it works.

Toll-free numbers from this corridor

French toll-free "numéro vert" lines start 0800 or 0805. They are domestic. From the US the call fails.

08 special numbers (0810 "azur", 0820, 0892, 0899) are shared-cost or premium inside France and usually fail or bill unpredictably from the US. Do not dial them.

French banks that print 0800 also publish a geographic or 09 number. BNP Paribas international-facing contacts are on BNP Paribas from abroad. Prefer +33 1 … or the paid 09 line on the same page.

Best calling windows

France uses CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) in summer. The offset to US Eastern is 6 hours year-round: 09:00 in Paris is 03:00 ET.

French offices often run 09:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00 with a real lunch break. Many public services stop taking calls at 16:00. August is a staffing trough; expect longer holds.

French offices do not publish quietest-hour data, so this guide does not guess one. Work from the opening hours on the contact page for the line you need. A practical US window is 08:00-11:00 ET, which is 14:00-17:00 in France, after lunch. Many offices are unstaffed 12:00-14:00 CET. State Department France page is the US government source.

Pitfalls specific to this corridor

  • 0800 / 08 from the US is a wasted first call. The working number is the 01 geographic line or a 09 VoIP number in the footer of the same page. Copy that, not the numéro vert.
  • French IVRs are usually French-only. Have the numéro fiscal, RIB / IBAN, and dossier number ready. An English option is not guaranteed, so check whether the institution publishes an English-language line or an online channel before you rely on the menu.
  • SMS OTP expects a French 06/07. A US mobile will not receive the bank's code. Finish app enrolment and a French-number fallback before the call.
  • August and Friday afternoons. Public-sector queues thin out after 15:00 CET on Friday and through mid-August. Call Tuesday-Thursday in other months when the deadline allows.
  • 09 vs 01 is not a quality ranking. A 09 number can be the official contact-centre trunk. Dial it as +33 9 …. Do not insert a 0.

Quick checklist

  • Have the destination as +33 plus 9 digits, leading 0 dropped.
  • Replace 0800 / 08xx with the +33 1 or +33 9 line on the same page.
  • Call 08:00-11:00 ET (14:00-17:00 France), not during French lunch.
  • Have numéro fiscal / IBAN and a French mobile for OTP.
  • Use a per-minute route if the US plan does not include France.
