The dial string is `+233` followed by the Ghanaian national number with the leading `0` dropped. Domestic toll-free lines starting `0800` do not connect from the UK. Most active numbers are mobiles on MTN, Vodafone, AirtelTigo, or Glo.

The dial string

To call Ghana from the UK, dial:

  • `+233 {mobile prefix or area code} {number}`, or
  • `00 233 {mobile prefix or area code} {number}` from a UK landline that prefers the international access prefix.

Drop the leading `0` from the Ghanaian number. An Accra MTN mobile printed as `024 123 4567` is dialled as `+233 24 123 4567`. An Accra landline printed as `030 2 123456` is dialled as `+233 30 2 123456`.

Full format notes live on the [Ghana calling page](/call-ghana) and the [Ghana dialing-code detail](/en/calling-codes/ghana). Skip legacy carrier IDD prefixes; UK networks treat `+` and `00` identically.

Mobile vs landline

Ghanaian mobile numbers are 10 digits nationally and start with `0`, followed by a 2-digit operator prefix (`24`/`54`/`55` MTN, `20`/`50` Vodafone, `26`/`27`/`56`/`57` AirtelTigo, `23` Glo). After dropping the leading `0`, dial `+233` plus 9 digits. Number portability means the prefix no longer proves which network answers.

Landlines use geographic codes. Accra is `30` internationally (`+233 30 …`). Kumasi uses `32`. Cape Coast and other regional exchanges use their own short codes; the national significant number follows the [ITU E.164](https://www.itu.int/dms_pub/itu-t/opb/sp/T-SP-E.164D-11-2011-PDF-E.pdf) plan.

Ghana does not charge the receiver for a normal incoming international call.

What it costs

Four realistic routes for a UK→Ghana call in August 2026:

  • UK mobile without an international add-on. EE lists Ghana in Zone 5; standard outbound voice from the UK is £4.64/min ([EE call abroad](https://ee.co.uk/help/mobile/roaming/call-abroad)).
  • EE International Extra (or similar bundle). Ghana sits in EE's broader international add-on country lists rather than the cheapest 9p Pass tier. Expect tens of pence per minute even with an add-on, check the live rate in the EE app before dialing.
  • Pre-paid international calling card. Cards for the UK, West Africa corridor advertise low headline rates. Connection fees and 60-second rounding often erase the advertised saving on short calls.
  • Browser-to-phone via WorldDial. $0.53/min to Ghanaian mobiles and $0.40/min to landlines on the live [rates](/rates) table, billed per second, no connection fee.

Ghana is an expensive termination market. Even so, bare EE at £4.64/min loses to every paid alternative above. For bank or GRA holds past 10 minutes, avoid the mobile default rate.

Toll-free numbers from this corridor

Ghanaian domestic toll-free numbers start `0800`. They are domestic-only and will not complete from a UK origin on any carrier or app.

GCB, GRA, and other institutions that advertise `0800` also publish a paid Accra number. Use the paid line documented on pages such as [GCB Ghana from abroad](/call-gcb-ghana-ghana-from-abroad). If a search result shows only `0800`, open the institution's contact page and look for a `030` Accra or `0XX` mobile alternative.

Best calling windows

Ghana runs on GMT (UTC+0) year-round. The UK matches Ghana in winter and runs 1 hour ahead during BST.

The best window for Accra helplines is `09:00-11:30` Ghana time, early in the working day before queues thicken. That is `09:00-11:30` GMT or `10:00-12:30` BST.

Avoid late Ghana afternoon (`15:00-17:00` Ghana time). Many public-sector desks thin out, and bank IVRs recirculate callers who missed morning slots.

Pitfalls specific to this corridor

  • 0800 and short codes fail internationally. Marketing materials still lead with toll-free. From the UK those numbers are dead ends; save the geographic or mobile alternative before you dial.
  • USSD and mobile-money prompts need a Ghana SIM. Agents may ask the caller to dial a USSD code or approve a MoMo prompt on a registered Ghanaian handset. A UK handset cannot complete that step, have a trusted person in Ghana ready, or ask for an alternate verification path.
  • DTMF on multi-level bank IVRs drops on weak VoIP routes. If GCB or another bank menu ignores keypresses, hang up and redial rather than shouting into the IVR.
  • WhatsApp does not replace institutional lines. MTN and Vodafone Ghana throttle app calling during congestion events. Tax, passport, and bank desks answer PSTN numbers, not chat apps.

Quick checklist

  • Format the number as `+233` plus the national digits without the leading `0`.
  • Drop the leading `0` before dialing.
  • Call in the `09:00-11:30` Ghana window when possible.
  • Have account numbers and a Ghana-side contact for MoMo/USSD verification ready.
  • Use a paid Accra or mobile number, not `0800`.

FAQs

What is the international dialing code for Ghana?

`+233`. From the UK, dial `+233` or `00 233`, then the national number with the leading `0` dropped.

Can I dial Ghanaian 0800 toll-free numbers from the UK?

No. Ghanaian `0800` numbers are domestic-only. Use the paid Accra (`+233 30 …`) or mobile number published alongside the toll-free line.

What's the cheapest way to call Ghana from the UK?

Browser-to-phone at about $0.53/min to mobiles (see [live rates](/rates)) usually beats EE's bare £4.64/min Zone 5 rate and most calling-card effective prices once connection fees are included. Ghana termination is costly on every route; pick per-second billing and skip the mobile default.

Will WhatsApp work for this call?

Only for another WhatsApp user who accepts an app call. Ghanaian banks and government offices do not staff WhatsApp as a substitute for their published phone numbers.

Why does the call connect but I hear nothing?

One-way audio on the Ghana termination gateway is common. Redial immediately. If three attempts stay silent, change route or provider.
