How to call Switzerland from the UK in 2026

Use +41 and drop Switzerland's leading 0. Zurich uses +41 44. Switzerland is not in the EU. Do not assume an 0800 number will work from the UK.

2 min de lectura

Switzerland's country code is +41. From the UK, dial +41 then the Swiss number with the domestic leading 0 dropped. A Zurich landline printed as 044 XXX XX XX is +41 44 XXX XX XX. A Swiss mobile printed as 07X XXX XX XX is +41 7X XXX XX XX. Do not keep the 0 after +41: +41 044 is a misdial.

How to dial

Use one of these origin formats:

  • +41 plus the national significant number (usual on a mobile)
  • 00 41 plus the same digits from a UK landline that still needs the international access prefix

Ofcom's National Telephone Numbering Plan designates 00 as access to international telephone numbers from the UK. + is a substitute on many mobiles. Do not assume every device accepts the same input.

More numbers: call Switzerland. Area codes: Switzerland calling codes.

The ITU E.164 list assigns 41 to Switzerland. Zurich geographic numbers use 44 (printed 044). Geneva uses 22 (printed 022). Swiss mobiles use 7 after +41 (printed 07x). A prefix is a format hint, not proof of the current network.

Cost, and why "EU minutes" is the trap

Switzerland is not an EU member. A call from the UK to Switzerland is an international call from home. That is not the same as roaming while you are in Switzerland, and it is not the same as an EU-minutes bucket.

EE's call-abroad page distinguishes EU minute add-ons from rest-of-world minute add-ons on pay as you go, and sells International Pass / International Extra for calls from the UK. Do not treat an "EU" label as covering Switzerland unless the plan names Switzerland.

Listed WorldDial rates checked on 13 September 2026: $0.06/min to landlines and $0.24/min to mobiles, in USD. The mobile rate is much higher than the landline rate on that snapshot. Calls are billed in whole minutes, rounded up. Check the current rate for your number on rates before adding credit.

If the plan names Switzerland, use your handset. If it only says EU, check before a long call. How calling works: how it works.

When 0800 is the wrong number

Swiss 0800 is a domestic freephone range. Do not assume a domestic toll-free number will work from the UK. Use the number the organisation publishes for international callers.

ESTV contacts for overseas callers are on ESTV federal tax from abroad.

Time difference

Switzerland is one hour ahead of the UK throughout the year. Both countries change their clocks on the same schedule. Check the organisation's local opening hours before calling.

Format mistakes to avoid

  • Keeping 044 after +41 (Zurich must be +41 44)
  • Assuming EU inclusive minutes cover Switzerland
  • Assuming an 0800 number will work from the UK
