How to call Germany from the US in 2026

The dial string is +49 followed by the German number with the leading 0 dropped. A Berlin landline printed as 030 1234567 is dialled as +49 30 1234567. A German mobile printed as 0171 1234567 is dialled as +49 171 1234567. German 0800 freephone does not connect from the US.

To call Germany from the US:

• ›+49 {area or mobile prefix} {number}, or
• ›011 49 {area or mobile prefix} {number} from a US landline that still needs an exit code.

German geographic area codes vary in length: Berlin 30, Hamburg 40, Munich 89, Frankfurt 69, Cologne 221. The subscriber portion shortens as the area code lengthens. The Bundesnetzagentur publishes the numbering plan; the ITU E.164 list is the international reference.

Mobile vs landline

German mobiles start 15, 16, or 17 after the country code (domestic 015x / 016x / 017x). Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, O2, and 1&1 all sit on those ranges with number portability. You cannot tell the current operator from the prefix.

Landlines keep city codes. Berlin +49 30, Munich +49 89, Hamburg +49 40, Frankfurt +49 69. Non-geographic 032 and some 0700 numbers exist; treat them as paid, not mobile.

Germany does not bill the receiver for a normal incoming international call.

• ›Pre-paid calling card. Headline EU landline rates look cheap. Connection fees and mobile surcharges erase the advantage on short calls.
• ›Browser-to-phone. Live rates to German landlines start from $0.02/min and mobiles from $0.03/min, billed per minute, rounded up, no connection fee.

Toll-free numbers from this corridor

German toll-free numbers start 0800. They are domestic. From the US the call fails.

0180 shared-cost numbers (0180-1 through 0180-7) are not free even inside Germany, and most do not route from outside the EU. 0900 premium-rate numbers should not be dialled from abroad; many VoIP routes block them.

Best calling windows

Germany uses CET (UTC+1) in winter and CEST (UTC+2) in summer. US Eastern uses EST (UTC-5) and EDT (UTC-4). The offset is 6 hours year-round: 09:00 in Berlin is 03:00 ET.

German offices often open 08:00-09:00 CET and close 16:00-17:00, with a real lunch gap around 12:00-13:00. Many close early on Friday.

German offices do not publish quietest-hour data, so this guide does not guess one. Work from the opening hours on the contact page for the line you need. A practical US window is 08:00-10:00 ET, which is 14:00-16:00 German time: after lunch and before close.

Pitfalls specific to this corridor

• ›0800 and 0180 from the US are a trap. Callers copy the freephone off a German letter and waste the first attempt. The working number is the geographic line in small print, usually a 30 / 69 / 89 / 221 number.
• ›German IVRs are long and German-first. Finanzamt, Krankenkasse, and bank menus often have no English option on the first two levels. Have the Steuernummer / IBAN / Vorgangsnummer ready before the first prompt. If the menu ignores keypresses, redial; do not sit through hold music on a broken DTMF path.
• ›TAN and SMS verification expect a German mobile. A US number will not receive the bank's mTAN. Complete app login and photo-TAN setup before the call, or the agent will stop at verification.
• ›Friday afternoon is dead. Public-sector lines in particular thin out after 14:00 CET on Friday. Call Tuesday-Thursday.
• ›0900 and some 032 numbers are blocked on VoIP routes. If a number starts 0900, stop. Find the geographic fallback.
